Class II Biological safety cabinets of type A2

In a Class II biological safety cabinet, all inflow and downflow air is blown via HEPA filters out of the cabinet without being recirculated into the work area. It is also the most common cabinet of all the different types available. 30% of the air is blown out and 70% of the air is recirculated to the work area as downflow. It protects the operator and the environment from exposure to biological hazards. It also protects products from contaminated room air and cross-contamination.

Note: If trace toxic chemicals are used as an adjunct to microbiological processes, the Type A cabinet should be vented.

Class II Biological safety cabinets of type B2

In a cabinet of class II type B2, all inflow and outflow air is lost after HEPA filtration to the external environment without recirculation in the bench. Type B2 benches are suitable for working with toxic chemicals used as an adjunct to microbiological processes in all circumstances as no recirculation takes place.
